During the last four years as an optometry student at Southern College of Optometry, and as an extern in a few of the greatest eye care facilities in Tennessee, I’ve seen and heard many different takes on the word “vision”. Most people will say something like “it’s everything you can see”, or “it’s the ability to make out objects using your eyes”. A leader in optometry and vision therapy describes it as “the deriving of meaning and direction of action as triggered by light”.
While slightly different, my definition of “vision” includes the beautifully designed structures of the visual system, and their ability to work together as a team:
“The elaborate teamwork performed by multiple parts of the body, including the eyes and over half of the brain, in order to guide behavior and experience.
As I begin to see many of you as patients at the practice of EyeXcel, I use this definition as guidance to ensure that from start to finish, my time with you in the exam lane is spent maximizing your “vision”. From the use of state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment procedures, to newly discovered therapy techniques, to the recommendation of premium glasses or contact lenses. I would like to ensure you that every second our doctors and staff are in the building, we are doing everything we can to make sure your “vision” experience is maximized.
